I expected the Apple Pencil to work great, and I like it for dabbling around, but not really for getting serious work done. Of course it’s not a native iPad app at all, but in many ways, I find mouse & keyboard just work better for pixel art. Stay tuned for more details about the content of the Open Beta. Pre-order or pre-purchase Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® II on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC or Steam PC and get early access to the Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare® II Open Beta. It still pales in comparison to the BEST options out there, which are desktop apps like Aseprite. I still have my complaints about it - copy & pasting is kind of frustrating - but it has good Apple Pencil support, two-finger tap-to-undo, layers & animation, you can import color palettes, export in a variety of formats including sprite sheets and magnified PNGs. The best option at this point for a native app is probably Pixaki, which sadly is like $25. There’s a bunch of other garbage looking apps on the app store that look really similar to these. They’re unoptimized iPhone apps so they show up as a small window locked in the portrait rotation. “Pixel Studio for Pixel Art” and ”8 bit painter” aren’t iPad friendly. If you want to do animation, that’s not great since you lose the ability to use layers in each frame! The layers also double as frames of animation. Compose sprites using layers & frames as separated concepts Create images in RGBA or Indexed color modes Open/Save GIF animations, sequence of PNG files, etc. If you just want to play around and dabble, I tried “Pixel Art Editor (Dottable)” and “Pixelable” - they’re OK for a beginner maybe? I think they’re the same app, actually, just rearranged a bit and Pixelable has more color palette options. About This Software Aseprite is a pixel art tool that lets you create 2D animations for videogames. Well, most of the ones you mentioned are free or semi-free so I tried them.
